Altamira

For Fall 2016, Monica Sordo’s Altamira Collection is a love letter to her hometown of Caracas, Venezuela. Continuously inspired by her love of architecture, Caracas was the fitting muse for her newest designs. In a city she spent so much of her life moving through, it was the distinct buildings constructed in the 1950s that held her fascination to this day. Dedicated to the rise of modernism, this is Monica’s most personal and transcendent collection to date.
Sleek in shape and clever in design, Monica Sordo’s customizable jewelry is rooted in the modernist landmarks that dot the cityscape. In central Caracas, the Plaza Altamira remains a powerful icon for the Venezuelan expat. She’s translated its towering obelisk into an element of her Tamanaco choker, so that it extends vertically like the structure does, falling below the collarbone.
Like the famous Hotel Tamanaco, the Tamanaco earrings and choker are also cut with precise perpendicular borders. When the neckpiece lays flat against skin it creates a striking utalitarian symmetry. While the earrings, layered with gold and silver finishing, are dual sided, to be worn as the mood strikes.
The Silencio earrings, necklace, and cuff introduce lighter, whimsical configurations to the collection. Of all the buildings, it’s the Centro Simon Bolivar, otherwise known as “Torres del Silencio” (the Towers of Silence) that most captured Monica’s heart. Likely the most influential architecturally during that period, the line between art and structure are blurred so that the placement of a pillar or the curved shape of a wall became a functional act of beauty. Monica captured this very essence by merging brass discs with moveable pins, allowing for the wearer to have transformable jewelry.
1950s Caracas was electric with energy and style. The soul of this campaign has inflections of a time when a martini and cigarette were oh so glamorous. When animal print rugs and geometric design epitomized sophistication. When elegance had a cheeky side. Monica channeled her favorite place- the ever chic Villa Blanchard- with it’s decorative tile and vivid decor into rich images for fall 2016.
